Foundations General Information
The information found on this website is intended to supplement the dog training education of 4-H members and parents attending our weekly meetings. The materials are not meant to stand alone as a dog training program. We place our handouts here so members can print them when they must miss a meeting due to illness or vacation, misplace the paper, or, as we all know can happen, find the dog ate it.
We have a selection of videos created by an 8-year member of our club. The videos, like the handouts, are meant to supplement our program, not stand alone. We hope the videos will help you watch another youth demonstrate the techniques and exercises we present at meetings. These are not done by a professional dog trainer. These are real youth doing their best to apply what they have learned. Mistakes are made. Details are forgotten in the excitement of the moment. It only results in giggles, momentary confusion, and, yet still, happy learning.
Some of the dogs have quite the long history of clicker training. For some of the dogs it is their very first exposure to any training. There is one video working with a dog which had only been rescued the week before. The eager participation from all of these dogs is a joy to watch.
Over time we will be adding more videos. We will always indicate when a video comes from a professional trainer or someone not in 4-H. We will try to note when a training technique is done differently from what we have presented at our meetings. This is not done to criticize, only to reduce confusion for our members. The Internet is ever changing. Every effort will be made to exclude links which lead to inappropriate content for 4-H. Please contact one of our leaders immediately if you find something has gone awry.
We hope our members and their parents find the videos helpful. Perhaps they will see a detail that they missed at the meeting. Perhaps watching someone else work through the training will clarify the lesson. We mostly want to inspire our members to try these activities at home. You don't have to be perfect. Just give it a try and talk to your leaders when it seems like something isn't working.
The Foundations tab is dedicated to the information provided to first year members during their first 8 weeks. In those weeks we focus on teaching the new members the basics of our dog training techniques while they train their own dog foundation behaviors. Those foundation behaviors and training techniques will be expanded in later weeks in Obedience, Agility, Showmanship, Rally, and Tricks/Freestyle meetings. As with all building projects, we start first with a strong foundation!
Enjoy and have fun with your dog!
